Sri Krishna Janmashtami
Janmashtami, or Gokul Ashtami, is one of the most anticipated Indian festivals. It feels like the birth of a family member- the preparations, anticipation and the overall elation is very infectious. As it has been observed for centuries, this day is a time for prayer, fasting and joyful rituals, plays & dramas, as well as reflection on the deity’s life on earth, and the loving spiritual connection that he continues to have with Hindus everywhere. Sri Krishna’s birth is synonymous with happiness and joy. Lord Krishna is a son to Vasudeva and Devaki, a friend to Arjuna, a lover to the cowherd damsels and more. Krishna is known by many names. In childhood, Sri Krishna was known as Bal Gopal meaning young Krishna. He is known as Madhav meaning the husband of the Goddess of fortune, Sri Lakshmi; as Giridhari-The lifter of the Govardhan Hill or Banwari - the one living in the groves of Vrindavan. He was a staunch reformer, very able politician, liberal democrat, messenger of peace, protector of the harassed, sincere impartial friend, selfless leader and above all, topmost preacher of spiritual knowledge.
